Remember the preseason bromides

by Jimmy Vaccaro (Twitter @JimmyVaccaro)

Who do you want going for your cash – Henne, Pennington or White or would you like to back Romo, Kitna and Bobby McGee?

I am sure you know those are the names of the projected quarterback rotations for the Dolphins and the Cowboys.

I just received all the rotations from strong-and-steady Sean Hess; the point being exhibition season betting has come a long way and rotations are now always in the equation.

All the other bromides take center stage also. Coaches on the hot seat usually coach a little harder while some coaches go through the motions and want only to get rep’s and conditioning, as the game outcome does not much matter.

We know that Peyton will get less playing time than me, but the guys fighting for the second spot treat it as they should, a showcase for that team and auditioning for another.

Rookie QBs will play like Super Bowl Sunday sans Bradford, who will also be treated with kid gloves.

With the ballyhoo of the young QBs I would imagine Colt McCoy will be winging it much more than the others who went ahead of him. But in most cases they will be playing with third and fourth string linemen so there is also that to be factored into the mix.

The scrambling QB usually does better if you know they are playing in the second half, also against the "B" list of defensers, which gives the scrambler a little edge.

We put up the first week’s lines a few days ago and got some play on the "dogs" as I noticed when I went into the hub today.

You can’t go wrong just betting anyone plus 3 points or better, but there is always some sort of a hitch. The moves that come 90 minutes before game time when a coach almost spells it out that there will be great interest or no interest in trying for the win.

There have been 4 point moves in these spots and just a guess since I have no data on those moves for the past 20 years, you come with more chips than you started with when you started even with laying the second and third generation numbers.

But times change, players change and attitudes change … so nothing is a slam dunk. You still gotta lay -110 before you get your ticket.

So it all starts next Sunday and we will have one final in the books for the start of the 2010 season.

And without skipping a beat the Hall of Fame game will have some great sub plots: Owens playing his first game with the Bengals and plenty of talk of the Dez Bryant injury as Jerry Jones will have a lot to say.

We waited a long time and it finally has arrived. Where is Marv Levy when you need him?

Just a side note for anyone over 50. I got in the car when it was top of the first inning, Yanks vs. Tampa Bay, even though I was fading John Sterling and compadre Suzyn Waldman.

It is an 8 inning drive from the Santa Fe to the Fiesta Henderson around Red Rock and the back stretch back to the Santa Fe, all on back streets.

Any memories for you old guys growing up, making a play and listening in the car? Win or lose it was worth the trip.

Take care,
Jimmy V.
